- 4/12/22 Patrick gave the BMB Seminar at Loyola Univeristy Chicago
- 4/1/22 Patrick along with his collaborators in the Cell and Molecular Physiology Department Dr. Jordan Beach and Dr. Gregory Aubert, were awarded a Transformative Grant Award from the Office of the Vice Provost of Research at Loyola University Chicago for our grant titled: "Establishment and Characterization of Pathological Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells from Loyola Patient-derived iPSC". We can't wait to get started on this fun new avenue of research!
- 3/18/22 Patrick gave a talk at the spring Chicago Cytoskeleton meetings.
- 3/15/22 The Oakes lab presented on the monthly Septin Zoom seminar. Maggie U, Shreya and Asia all gave updates on their projects related to septins and their roles in migration.
- 3/14/22-3/18/22 The Oakes lab is at the APS March Meeting being held in Chicago! We're on a couple of different talks and posters you can check out:
- Session A06: Our collaborator Matthew Schmidt from U Chicago with be presenting his work "Machine learning continuum models for cellular force generation". We're all super excited for this project. Look for a preprint soon!
- Session B07: Our collaborator Melissa Quintanilla from the Beach Lab will be presenting her work "Identifying mechanisms of non-muscle myosin II filament assembly and amplification"

- 10/14/21 Our paper on using Fast Fourier Transforms to measure alignment in biological images was published today! Check out the final version in Frontiers in Computer Science: Computer Vision today!
- 9/12/21-9/15/21 Patrick gave a talk at the EMBO Septin 2021 Workshop in Berlin. What a great conference and chance to meet so many people working on septins. The hybrid format really worked well!
- 8/23/21 Masters student Asia Paguntalan is doing a joint rotation with us and the Beach lab. Welcome Asia!
- 8/19/21 The final version of Stefano's paper is online at Molecular Biology of the Cell
- 7/22/21 Our latest preprint is out on bioRxiv! It's a methods paper about how to use Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) to extract local alignment data from biological images. This builds off previous efforts from the lab and was expanded by Stefania Marcotti from the Stramer lab at King's College London. The code is all available on our GitHub page with versions for both MATLAB and Python.
- 7/6/21 Shreya successfully passed her qualifying exam today! Congrats Shreya!
- 6/23/21 Maggie successfully defended her Masters in Neuroscience thesis today! Congrats Maggie! Maggie will be staying on with the Oakes and Beach Labs to pursue her Ph.D.
- 5/26/21 Stefano's paper about the mechanosensitivity of the LIM domain protein testin was accepted to MBoC!
- 05/14/21 Patrick will be giving a talk virtually at the One Biophysics Meeting at the University of Toronto.
- 3/4/21 Maggie has officially accepted a spot in next year's PhD class here at Loyola! We're all super excited that you'll continue to be around for the next few years!

- 12/8/20 Stefano gave a talk about his work on the mechanosensitivity of the multimodular LIM domain protein testin in a subgroup at Cell Bio Virtual 2020. His talk is from 1:47-2:07 PM EST.
- 9/1/20 We're very excited that Alexia Caillier is going to be joining the lab as a postdoc in February 2021! Alexia is coming from Marc-Etienne Huot's lab at Laval University in Quebec, Canada where she works on protein translation at sites of adhesion. She defends in January and we're looking forward to her joining us soon after!
- 7/24/20 Our most recent paper with the Fowell lab is now online at Frontiers in Immunology!
- 7/19/20 We're very excited that Lee Troughton, PhD is going to be joining the lab as a postdoc in February 2021! Lee is coming from Kevin Hamill's lab at the University of Liverpool, UK where he worked on laminins, specifically the LaNt α31 isoform and it's impact on tumor invasiveness.
- 6/9/20 Our paper with Deborah Fowell's lab at the University of Rochester was just accepted at Frontiers in Immunology. Nick from our lab helped do all the in vitro assays to show how fibronectin regulates CD4+ T cell migration. Congrats to Ninoshka and Nick!
- 6/2/20 Our collaboration paper that was just published in PNAS was chosen for the cover of this week's issue! Congratulations Emma!
- 5/21/20 Our newest paper, a collaboration with Dabid Topham's lab at URMC is out in PNAS. It's all about the role of CD103 and CD49a integrins in modulating adhesion of TRM cells. Read it here!
- 5/13/20 Patrick gave a seminar to the Department of Molecular Pharmacology & Neuroscience at Loyola University Chicago today.
- 3/13/20 The Chicago Cytoskeleton meeting Patrick was going to speak at was canceled due to the Covid-19 precautions. This was a sensible decision made for the safety of all and we look forward to the next meeting!

- 12/1/19-12/6/19 Patrick gave a talk at the Material Research Society Fall Meeting
- 11/2/19 Patrick and Nick were at the 5th Annual Immune Imaging Symposium supported by the P01 project grant.
- 10/30/19 Patrick and collaborator Jordan Beach were awarded a James & Carolyn Beck Equipment Grant from the Loyola University Chicago Cardiovascular Research Institute. The funds will be used to support the purchase of a Ring TIRF system to be installed on the new Oakes Lab microscope!
- 10/17/19 Patrick and the lab received funding from the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) as part of a program project grant headed by Deborah Fowell at the University of Rochester Medical Center! Patrick's portion of the grant focuses on the mechanics of immune cell migration. The grant includes funding for a postdoctoral position so be on the look out for a job advertisement soon!

- 8/1/19 A new chapter starts for the lab as we've moved to Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in the Department of Cell & Molecular Physiology! We'll be hiring so anyone interested in joining our group should reach out!
- 6/6/19 Our collaboration with Tamara Bidone and Greg Voth is out in PLoS Computational Biology! This model builds on our recent PNAS paper about the role of integrin bonds in substrate stiffness sensing. Here we look at how different bond kinetics in integrins can facilitate adhesion formation.

- 5/28/19 We have two undergraduates working with us this summer as part of an REU program. Lydia is a University of Rochester student majoring in Biochemistry and Maham is a Reed College student majoring in Physics. Welcome Lydia and Maham!
